Recommended Brands:
Instruments: This is the point where the student might start to outgrow their beginner instrument. An upgraded instrument will make playing music much more enjoyable. Some instruments to look at are: Knilling, Franz Hoffman, Scherl and Roth, Glaesal. Please contact me before buying an instrument that you think is a "great deal." In the orchestral string world, you really do get what you pay for!!
Rosin: Any rosin will do for this level of student. I recommend the D'Adarrio Light Rosin though, as it is farily cheap but still held in high regard in its quality.
Strings: While I still recommend the D'Addario Preludes for this level of student, it is time to start thinking about getting better strings. Better strings will allow for better sound, tone, intonation, projection, etc. Again, the D'Addario Preludes are very high quality for the price, but something like D'Addario Helicore or Thomastik Dominant is a better choice for the student who is very involved with orchestra.
Shoulder Rests: Shoulder rests are a must for Violinists and Violists. These items will help to promote proper positioning of their instrument and set them up for proper techniques later in life. Try to take your child's instrument to the store and ask to try a few out for the best fit. Look for enough padding such as the Kun brand as well as Everest as well as enough curve and height. The store should be able to help you find one that fits your child.
